Recently while driving Uber, I met an enthusiastic and joyful young man named Tishawn. He is from the Bahamas and comes to the United States for three or four months each year to work and earn money for his family. While he’s here, he works in construction, doing tough jobs that require strength, patience, and focus. Even though he has a very young-looking face, Tishawn is older than most people expect and he actually has a nine year old son.

Back home in the Bahamas, Tishawn is a bartender, a job that fits his friendly smile and warm personality. His son and a close, supportive family mean everything to him. Every long workday in the States has a purpose—to provide for the people he loves most. You could hear the pride in his voice when he talked about his son and the life he is working hard to build.

Tishawn shared that he is usually a shy person, which made our conversation even more special. Somehow, during the ride, he felt comfortable opening up about his life, his work, his family and his faith. When he isn’t working, he enjoys simple, peaceful moments—finding a quiet place to relax or walking through the mall just to window shop and clear his mind.

Back home in the Caribbean, he also enjoys playing basketball and spending precious time with his family. Meeting Tishawn was a reminder that determination doesn’t always shout; sometimes it works quietly and steadily in the background. It was truly a pleasure to meet Tishawn and welcome him to the Ubernamez family, where every ride has a story and every person matters.
