Iyanta: A Life of Humility and Blessing

A recent trip to Home Depot turned into an unexpected opportunity to meet someone whose story was far more meaningful than the purchase I had come to make. I needed some assistance with a bathroom cabinet that was being sold as a floor model, and that’s when I was introduced to Iyanta, a Home Depot manager. From the very beginning, she was remarkably helpful, patient, and kind. The cabinet needed to be removed from its display, which could have easily become a frustrating process, but Iyanta handled everything with a calm and helpful spirit. As we worked through the details, I quickly realized that there was much more to this woman than her position as a manager.

Iyanta was born and raised in the Virgin Islands and comes from the Rastafarian culture. During our conversation, we discovered some common curiosity about something quite distinctive about her—her beautiful dreadlocks. We talked about the care and cleaning of dreadlocks, and that simple conversation opened the door to learning more about her life. Iyanta has been a dedicated Home Depot employee for more than twelve years and has spent the last four years serving as a manager. She is also a mother of four, with three daughters and a son, whose ages range from 16 to 22. Clearly, family is an important part of the life she has built.
Iyanta is also committed to living a healthy and intentional lifestyle. She is vegan and loves to cook, with beans serving as one of her primary sources of protein. She regularly uses herbs in her cooking and places a strong emphasis on fitness and taking care of her body. Yet what struck me most was that, when I asked her what she would most like people to know about her, she didn’t talk about her accomplishments, her career, her family, or even her healthy lifestyle. Instead, she immediately talked about humility. Humility, she explained, is a character quality that is extremely important to her—a quality she wants to be a hallmark of her life.
Even her name carries a beautiful story. Iyanta received her unique name from her grandmother’s sister. The name may be a variation of Iyana, a name sometimes associated with meanings such as “God is gracious” or “a blessing and gift from God.” In some interpretations, it can also carry the beautiful imagery of God’s blessings pouring down like rain. Rain is a powerful symbol of life, renewal, and joy, making her name especially fitting for someone whose presence seemed to bring kindness and encouragement to an otherwise ordinary shopping experience.
I left Home Depot that day with more than a bathroom cabinet. I left with the story of a woman who has spent more than a decade serving others, raising a family, caring for her health, honoring her heritage, and striving to live out a quality that she considers central to who she is. Humility was not simply a word Iyanta chose when I asked her about herself—it seemed to be something I had already experienced firsthand. She had been helpful without making me feel like a burden, patient without showing frustration, and kind without expecting anything in return. In a world where people often want recognition for what they accomplish, Iyanta reminded me that sometimes the greatest character quality is quietly putting others first. And perhaps, like the meaning behind her name, she truly is a reminder of a blessing poured down like rain.
