Freddrenia… Compassionate and Caring!

During a recent cruise that I enjoyed with my wife and several family members, one unexpected encounter turned into a memorable friendship. One afternoon while we were participating in a lively music trivia game, I suddenly heard a beautiful voice behind me. Curious, I turned around and saw three women, one singing along with confidence and joy. All three may have been singing but one voice especially stood out. I smiled and told the woman that I would love to sit in front of her during a church service just to hear her sing. I also encouraged her to try karaoke on the ship before the cruise was over. She laughed warmly, clearly flattered but humble at the same time.

A couple of days later, I saw the same women again during one of the evening entertainment shows and decided to continue our conversation. As we introduced ourselves more fully, I was pleased to meet three close friends, Angela (the bold singer) Jacqueline and Freddrenia along with Tiffany, Freddrenia’s daughter.

One name immediately caught my attention — Freddrenia. I had never heard a name quite like that before, and naturally I had to ask about it.

With a smile, she explained that when she was born in Chicago, her parents struggled for eleven days trying to decide on a name. Finally, they came up with something truly unique by combining both of their own names. Her father’s name was Fred, and her mother’s name was Drenia. Together, they created Freddrenia — a name as distinctive as the woman herself.

The meanings behind her parents’ names seemed to beautifully reflect the character that Freddrenia has developed throughout her life. The name Fred carries the meaning “peaceful ruler” and “wise counselor,” while the name Drenia, derived from ancient Greek roots, means “deer,” often symbolizing gentleness, grace, and sensitivity. In many ways, Freddrenia appeared to embody both meanings. She carried herself with a calm confidence and wisdom that made others feel comfortable around her, yet she also possessed a gentle compassion that could easily be seen in the way she interacted with people. There was a kindness in her spirit that felt genuine and deeply rooted.

When Freddrenia was about six years old, her family relocated from Chicago to Massachusetts, where she grew up, attended school, and eventually began working in healthcare. Life, however, brought its share of difficult seasons and challenges. During one particularly challenging time, her father encouraged her to move to Oklahoma, where he was living. That decision opened a new chapter in her life. For more than twenty years now, Oklahoma has been her home, and she has continued her healthcare career there as a coordinator who primarily assists disabled individuals. When I asked her about hobbies or interests, she didn’t hesitate for even a moment before saying that helping others was what she loved most. Her priorities were clear and inspiring — God first, family second, and then her friends and church family close behind. It was obvious that serving others was not just something she did; it was part of who she was.

As our conversation continued, I could easily see why her friends Angela and Jacqueline, along with her daughter Tiffany, enjoyed spending time with her so much. Freddrenia was cheerful, approachable, compassionate, and full of life. Since this was her very first cruise, she was soaking in every moment of the experience, and she joked that cruising might just become her newest favorite hobby. Meeting her reminded me once again how fascinating people can be, and how every unique name often carries an even more unique story behind it. Freddrenia certainly left a lasting impression on me.

It was truly a pleasure meeting her group and welcoming Freddrenia into the “Uber Namez Family.”
