Sunshine… One Big Smile and Out Comes the Sun!

Some people leave an impression long after the meal is over. My wife and I recently discovered that while dining at Outback Steakhouse in Fort Myers. Our waitress was friendly, attentive, and easy to talk with, but one thing puzzled us—she wasn’t wearing a name tag. As we finished our meal and prepared to leave, we struck up a conversation and finally learned her name. It wasn’t Susan, Sandy, or Sharon. Her name was Sunshine!

Naturally, we had to ask how she got such a unique name. She smiled and shared the story of her birth and why she was gifted such a special name. She was born at home, and when she arrived, she was so still and quiet that her mother became concerned that something might be wrong. Then, as her mother looked down, the newborn baby suddenly broke into a huge smile. At that exact moment, the sun burst through the clouds and filled the room with light. Overwhelmed with joy, her mother decided right then and there that her daughter’s name would be Sunshine—a name that would prove to fit her perfectly.

Originally from Pennsylvania, Sunshine has lived in Fort Myers for about a year. She is the proud mother of two sons, ages 21 and 23, with her oldest serving in the Navy. Her interests are as varied as they are creative. She enjoys oil and watercolor painting, gardening, camping, hiking, and just about anything that allows her to be outdoors. During our conversation, she showed us some of her artwork, and I was genuinely impressed by both her talent and her passion for creating beautiful things.

What made our conversation especially memorable was learning that Sunshine has worn many hats throughout her life. In addition to waitressing, she has worked as a social worker and even started her own church. Her experiences have given her a warm, engaging personality and a genuine interest in people. By the time we left, we felt as though we had made a new friend. Some names are unforgettable because they’re unusual. Others are unforgettable because they perfectly match the person who carries them. In Sunshine’s case, it was both.
