On New Year’s Eve, during one of the last rides of the night, I met a young woman named Mariel. She rode with her boyfriend, who also had an interesting and unique name, Addiel! Mariel is originally from Cuba, but she has been living in the United States for about two years. She told me she was a rock ’n’ roll singer and played in bars and clubs around Southwest Florida. Her band, once known as “Two Looping Vibes” has recently been renamed “Driftstone”. She spoke about it with the kind of excitement that made it clear music wasn’t just a hobby—it was her dream.

When I asked why she came to the United States, Mariel didn’t hesitate. “Freedom!” she said. She explained that life in Cuba was very hard and full of limits, while America felt full of opportunity. While working to grow her music career, Mariel stayed busy doing delivery jobs and other gig work. She believed that every season of life mattered and wanted to make good use of her time while waiting for bigger doors to open.
Music is a big part of Mariel’s strength. She had recently won a singing competition, which helped her gain more attention and confidence. Even though her father had passed away when she was very young, she stayed close to her mother, who had come to the United States first.
Mariel is grateful to be reunited with her mom, here in Fort Myers.
The meaning of Mariel’s name was interesting. It could mean bitterness or rebellion, but it could also mean a wished-for child or beloved. Mariel seemed to carry both meanings in a balanced way. She demonstrates fire and passion as a rock ‘n’ roll vocalist, but also kindness and hope. She is passionate about joy and freedom.

As the new year approached, Mariel shared her goal for 2026: to grow stronger in her health and fitness while continuing to share her music. She wanted her songs to lift people up and help them feel excited and happy about life. Listening to her story, I realized that Americans often take their liberty and opportunity for granted. Mariel has experienced oppression, first hand, and is determined to make the most of her new found freedom and turn it into something worth hearing.
Please welcome Mariel to the Ubernamez website. Keep your eyes and ears open as Driftstone gains greater popularity in Southwest Florida!
