Eileen and Brenda… Radiance and Strength!

During a recent cruise to Mexico I had the pleasure of meeting two remarkable women who left a lasting impression. Their names were Eileen and Brenda, 93-year-old twins originally from Brooklyn, NY. Though they eventually settled on the east coast of Florida, living about an hour apart from one another, the closeness they share has never faded. They still talk nearly every day on the phone and make it a point to spend time together regularly. Watching them laugh, and share their stories was like witnessing a lifelong friendship wrapped inside the bond of sisterhood.

One of the most charming stories they shared was about how they received their names. Their parents had no idea they were expecting twins and had only chosen one name: “Eileen Brenda.” But when the surprise arrival of a second daughter came, the middle name Brenda was handed over to the other baby. From that moment on, Eileen no longer had a middle name because, as she jokingly says, “Brenda stole it from me.” The sisters still laugh about it to this day. It was such a simple story, yet it perfectly captured the warmth, humor, and affection that has existed between them for more than nine decades.
What amazed me most was how vibrant and healthy these two women appeared. Both were trim, energetic, and full of life. In their younger years, when smoking was fashionable and common, they both smoked for a time, but eventually they made the decision to quit and embrace a healthier lifestyle. Even now, Eileen participates in chair yoga three or four times a week, while Brenda still plays tennis regularly. At 93 years old, they carried themselves with a vitality that many people decades younger would envy. Seeing them gave me hope that perhaps my wife and I might remain active and joyful in our later years.
As you might imagine, women who have lived for 93 years have witnessed an incredible amount of history and change. Eileen shared a particularly memorable story about working at a bank when she was younger and experiencing the terror of a robbery there. Their life journeys also took different paths in marriage and family life. Eileen married young at just 19 years old, while Brenda waited until she was 27. Yet despite the differences in their lives, their connection to one another remained constant and deeply rooted.
By the end of our conversation I felt genuinely enriched by the time I had spent with these two extraordinary sisters. There was something deeply inspiring about their gratitude for life, their enduring joy, and the obvious love they still shared not only with one another but with the people around them. In a world that often moves too quickly, Eileen and Brenda reminded us that relationships, laughter, healthy living, and thankfulness are treasures that grow more valuable with time. Meeting them was one of the unexpected blessings of our cruise, and I doubt we will ever forget these two delightful gals from Brooklyn.
Their names seemed especially fitting after spending time with them and hearing the stories of their lives. Eileen carries a name with deep Gaelic roots that is connected to the name Helen and has come to mean “brightness” or “radiance.” That description suited her perfectly, for there was a warmth and lighthearted sparkle about her that brightened the table every time she spoke. Brenda, whose name means “sword,” “blade of the sword,” or even “flaming sword,” reflected the qualities of strength, courage, and determination. Her active lifestyle, resilient spirit, and confident personality revealed a quiet bravery forged through decades of life’s challenges and triumphs. Together, these sisters beautifully embodied the meanings of their names—one radiating warmth and joy, the other demonstrating enduring strength and courage—and the combination made them truly unforgettable.
