On one of my recent Uber rides, I had the pleasure of meeting a wonderful couple, Despina and her husband, Julian.
Born in Mexico, Julian, grew up in California but later moved to New York City, where he became a stockbroker. It was there, in 2001, that he met Despina, and the two of them began a journey together that eventually brought them south to Fort Myers, Florida, where they now live.

Despina has a name with deep Greek roots. The name means “lady” or “mistress of the house,” and in history, it was even used as a title for noble women, goddesses, and, in the Greek Orthodox tradition, the Virgin Mary. Her name is a Greek form of Maria, or Mary, and it carries with it a strong sense of tradition and respect.
Despina is a remarkable woman in many ways. She is a history buff but also enjoys cooking dishes from different cultures, including Mexican, Greek, and Italian foods. She is a skilled linguist who can fluently speak five languages! Beyond her talents, she has a gentle and caring heart, showing compassion and concern for others. She lives up to the character and uniqueness of her name!
Together, Despina and Julian make a wonderful couple. Their journey from New York, and finally to Florida has endured some major “bumps in the road” but shows how life can lead us to unexpected but beautiful places. Meeting them was a joy, and I was grateful to have had the chance to share part of their story during our time together on the ride.
Please welcome Despina and Julian to the Ubernamez family!
