David came to the United States from Uganda for the very first time with one purpose in mind: to learn how to better help his people. He was attending a special conference that focused on growing crops, improving irrigation, and finding ways for families in poverty to provide for themselves. Even before he spoke, you could sense his determination. Traveling across the world is difficult for anyone, but for David, it was especially challenging. He needs regular dialysis and had to arrange treatments with Lee Memorial Hospital just to make the trip possible. Each session takes hours, yet he never complained. His commitment was clear—he came because he knew his village needed him.

When David stepped into the car, he didn’t waste a moment. His first question was simple but bold: “Are you part of a church?” That one question opened the door to an important conversation. David was looking for contacts in the United States—people who could partner with him and support the work he was doing back home. His courage impressed me. Many people might feel shy or uncertain in a new country, but David knew why he was here, and he was ready to talk to anyone who could help make a difference.

As we drove, I learned more about his mission. David is the chairman of a nonprofit in his village in Uganda. The organization helps children with medical needs, provides heifers to women so they can rise out of poverty, and even digs wells to give families clean water. These are simple projects on the surface, but they change lives in powerful ways. Clean water means fewer illnesses. A healthy cow can bring steady income. Medical care can give a child a chance to grow up strong. David works hard to make all of this happen.

I introduced David to some people in our area who might be able to support his work. First, I connected him with Dan from Builders Without Borders, who understood the kind of practical, hands-on help that villages like David’s often need. Later, I introduced him to my pastor and several elders from our church. Each person David met could see his sincerity, his passion, and his desire to serve his community. It was clear that helping people wasn’t just something David did—it was who he was.

David’s dedication reaches beyond his projects. He is also a devoted father to his two sons, ages eighteen and twenty-three. Even from across the ocean, he thinks about their future and the future of the children in his village. One of the main goals of his nonprofit is to share the gospel of Jesus Christ through their service, showing God’s love in practical, life-changing ways. For David, faith and action go hand in hand.

Meeting David was an honor. In just a short ride, I witnessed a man whose boldness, courage, and determination have the power to transform lives. He faces challenges most of us can hardly imagine, yet he continues to push forward with hope and purpose. I am grateful not only to have met him, but also to have played a small part in helping him build connections that may strengthen his work for years to come. David is proof that one person—steadfast, committed, and full of faith—can make a lasting difference in the world.
